Classes & cycles : école maternelle & primaire

The different classes and “cycles” of the French school system « système scolaire »

« école maternelle » is divided into 3 levels :

- « petite section » the first year,

- then « moyenne section »,

- and then « grande section ».

« école élémentaire » (primaire) is divided into 5 levels :

- « CP » (cours préparatoire) the first year,

- « CE1 » (cours élémentaire 1er niveau),

- « CE2 » (cours élémentaire 2ème niveau),

- « CM1 » (cours moyen 1er niveau),

- « CM2 » (cours moyen 2ème niveau).

Cycles of the « école maternelle » and « élémentaire » :

Before 1990, « école primaire » and « école maternelle » were only divided into classes. Since 1990, « cycles » have been added to this organization. The purpose was to help children with their learning process. In this « cycles » system, if a child doesn't understand a concept when it is first studied, it will be explained and taught several times until the end of this cycle.

School programs are national so they are the same for all the schools.

Cycle 1 includes « petite section » and  « moyenne section » classes.

Cycle 2 includes « grande section maternelle », « CP », « CE1 ».

Cycle 3 includes “CE2”, “CM1”, “CM2”.

From the beginning of the second cycle, children study maths, foreign languages « langues étrangères », arts and sport « éducation sportive ».

In cycle 3, they also study history and geography « histoire-géographie », sciences technologies. Among these technologies is « informatique ».

When your children go to « école maternelle » and « élémentaire », they only have one teacher. We usually call this teacher “un maître”, “une maîtresse”.
