How could we present French recipes without giving you the one for bread dough? Anyway there are plenty of different recipes; this is just one of them! You can make the basic bread dough and add various ingredients if you fancy a change of taste! For instance, add chopped walnuts or bacon bits!
450g (16oz) special flour for bread-making or wheat flour
20 g (0.8 oz) dry baker’s yeast
30 (1.3 cups) water
Mix the flour with yeast.
Add the water gradually and knead at the same time.
Knead the dough until it is smooth and doesn’t stick to the fingers, add a little more flour if the dough is too sticky!
Leave the dough in the mixing bowl and cover with a clean tea towel; leave it to rise for at least two hours.
Then shape the bread into a ball-shape and or use baguette tins and make baguettes.
Pre-heat the oven to 220°C, make slits in the top with a sharp knife blade.
Bake for 30 minutes.
Take the bread out of the oven and leave it on a rack to cool.
Tip: to get a crunchy golden crust place a small cup of water in the oven or spray the bread with a little water just before you put it in the oven. The steam produced will help it form a great crust!
