If you don't want / can not have the funerals "funérailles" organized by the morticians you must :
1. « Faire constater le décès » to get the burial permits « permis d'inhumer »,
2. declare the death « déclarer le décès »,
3. get the death certificate « faire établir l'acte de décès » and sign it.
1. Faire constater le décès
For that you need to establish a certificate of recognition of death « certificat de constatation de décès », written on a
form that you find in the city hall. It is a medical certificate.
If you live in a small town, this is your family doctor who can do it, if you live in a big city, it must be drafted by a doctor of Civil Status « médecin de l'état civil ».
In cases of violent death, you must contact the police or gendarmerie, they will establish a « constatation de décès ».
2. Déclarer le décès
The « déclaration » must be made within 24 hours after the death.
If you call the « pompes funèbres », they will issue this document (and all the others).
If the death occurred at the hospital, the statement will be made directly by the hospital services.
Otherwise, go to the town hall in the place of death :
- Bring proof of your identity (passport),
- the « livret de famille » of the deceased or his identity card. You can also bring the extract or a copy of his birth certificate or marriage (« extrait ou copie de l'acte de
naissance / mariage »),
- the death certificate prepared by the doctor or the « gendarmerie ».
You will need to sign the death certificate « certificat de décès » prepared by the council. They will also give you a permit for the burial « permis d'inhumer ». If you want to bury the deceased in another municipality, contact its « mairie », it is possible that you need a special permit that the council will deliver you.
