Comprendre la France, la culture française, les Français et apprendre le français. Welcome to France!
1 Avril 2008
A few words you need :
A la carte : more expensive than a menu because you choose your own menu and might have 2 entrées if you are very hungry, no dessert if don't like...
Menu : usually you choose between at least 2 or 3 menus. Some menus have no « entrée » or no « dessert ».
« Plat du jour » is today's special
so is « menu du jour », « dessert du jour »
In some restaurants, the different menus are « formule » :
Entrée + plat
Plat + dessert
Entrée + plat + dessert
"Plat" means main dish
You will also be given « la carte des vins » (wine menu).
If you drink an apéritif, you might also have a « amuse-bouche ». Amuse-bouche is like a « mise en bouche » it's a small snack.
Then you might choose an « entrée », a salad is very common.
Then the « plat principal » (main course). On your menu you can choose between a plat principal de « viande » (meat), « poisson » (fish),
« accompagnement » / « garni »/ « garniture », a « garniture » or « accompagnement » is like a side dish (except it will be IN your plate), most of the time you can choose between : haricots verts (green beans), frites (french fries), champignons (mushrooms).
Plateau de fromages / assiette de fromages (cheese). If it's a "plateau de fromages" you'll have
to choose. You can ask which ones are cow's milk cheese (fromage de vache) and goat's milk cheese (fromage de chèvre). Choose 3 or 4 pieces of cheese, no more.
Fromage sec / fromage blanc (also frais)
In France, restaurants are « service compris » so you don't have to tip except if you want.
If your menu specifies « buffet à volonté » it means « all you can eat » and sometimes you have « buffet d'entrées » and/or « buffet de desserts ». Interesting !
If you see « en papillote », it means it's a fish fillet baked wrapped in a tin foil.
If you see « chèvre chaud » it means it's a salad with goat cheese toasts on top.
« plateau de fruits de mer » is seafood.
