Jour de l'an : 1 janvier (January)

Lundi de Pâques : the date changes every year because it depends on the moon. Pâques takes place between 22 mars (march) and 25 avril (april).

Jeudi de l'ascension : this day that is also a religious holiday occurs 39 days after Pâques. And as Pâques changes, jeudi de l'ascension also...

Lundi de Pentecôte : 50 days after Pâques.

1er mai : labour day. You'll hear about (and see) « les traditionnels défilés », big demonstrations organized by the unions.

8 mai : end of the Second World War, also known as « Victoire 1945 »

14 juillet : National Day with fireworks on the evening (July)

15 août : Assomption, known as « Fête de la vierge Marie », « Virgin Mary Day » (August)

1er novembre : Toussaint. The day after is « la fête des morts » (Dead people day) but it's not a holiday.

11 novembre : Armistice 1918. On this day we celebrate the end of the First World War

Noël : 25 décembre

"Année civile" what is it ?

The « année civile » starts on January the first until December the 31^st.

It is different from the « année scolaire » for example which starts at the beginning of September and ends in June.

A "jour ouvré" what is it ?

A « jour ouvré » is a working day. So « jours ouvrés » in the administration go from Monday to Friday.

In a small village shops « jours ouvrés » go from Tuesday to Saturday.

Public holidays are not « jours ouvrés » but « jours fériés ».

"Faire le pont" what does it mean ?
